Kayak angler holding a black drumPhoto: Catching redfish in Florida with DOA lures

Updated: Thursday, October 29, 2026 · Next update: Thursday, November 5, 2026

This Louisiana fishing report is a seasonal outlook for the coastal marsh from Grand Isle to Venice and Delacroix. Cooler fronts are shifting trout and redfish toward protected marsh shorelines, while sheepshead stack on rigs and pilings. Cold fronts and the wind that follows them are the main variable for the week.

What’s Hitting

Speckled trout and redfish are working marsh shorelines, bayou mouths and bays, feeding on shrimp and small baitfish. Sheepshead and black drum gather around rigs, pilings and the jetty rocks. Flounder are staging near the passes ahead of their movement offshore. Offshore, mangrove snapper hold on structure on calm days. Sheepshead also gather around rock jetties and pilings near Grand Isle, where fiddler crabs and shrimp produce steady action.

Where to Find Them

Fish the marsh shorelines around Grand Isle, Lafitte and Delacroix for trout and redfish. The jetties and passes near Grand Isle and Venice hold flounder and sheepshead, and Port Fourchon’s rigs hold mangrove snapper and drum. Protected bayous are good retreats when wind is strong on open bays. West of the Mississippi, the marshes near Cocodrie and Lafitte provide protected water, and the beach at Grand Isle gives shore anglers a way into the surf.

Tides & Conditions

Louisiana’s tides are small, so wind and fronts shape water movement. A north wind after a front can lower water and push fish out of shallow ponds, while a south wind raises water and spreads them. Moving water at bayou mouths and passes remains the best bet for steady action. Spring tides raise marsh water and let fish spread into ponds, while lower tides concentrate them in creeks and bayous.

Tackle & Tactics

Live shrimp under a popping cork is the classic marsh rig for trout and redfish. A gold spoon or a soft plastic on a quarter-ounce jighead covers reds along grass. For sheepshead, fiddler crabs or shrimp near pilings. Use 15 to 20 pound fluorocarbon, and slow your retrieve in cool water. Switch to a lighter jighead when the water is clear, and lengthen your leader to 20 pounds around oysters and pilings to reduce cutoffs.

Local Intel This Week

Public access includes Grand Isle State Park, Port Fourchon launches and the Delacroix ramps. Fish concentrate at bayou mouths, marsh shorelines and rigs. Check current state and federal regulations and seasons before keeping fish, especially speckled trout, redfish and flounder. Another useful access point is the Grand Isle Fishing Pier, which lets shore anglers target trout, drum and sheepshead after dark.

This Week’s Tip

Fish the day after a front. Trout and redfish feed hard as the wind lays down, and clear water improves sight-casting.
