Kayak angler holding a flounder beside a marsh edgePhoto: Flounder caught on the flats

Updated: Thursday, October 29, 2026 · Next update: Thursday, November 5, 2026

This South Padre Island fishing report is a seasonal outlook for the Laguna Madre, the Brazos Santiago jetties and the Gulf beach. Cooling water improves the flats fishing, with trout and redfish active in the shallows and snook holding at docks and channel edges. Wind is the main variable, because the Laguna is shallow and responds strongly to it.

What’s Hitting

Speckled trout are on the grass flats, redfish are on the shoreline and in shallow potholes, and snook are around docks and channel edges. Black drum and flounder hold in the channels, and bull reds linger at the jetties. Sheepshead build on pilings as water cools. Bluefish and Spanish mackerel may still appear along the jetties and surf on warm afternoons.

Where to Find Them

Fish the flats near Port Isabel and the Arroyo Colorado for trout and redfish, probe the docks and channel edges for snook, and work the Brazos Santiago jetties for bull reds. The Queen Isabella Causeway pilings hold sheepshead, and the Gulf beach holds whiting and redfish. The Gulf beach near Isla Blanca Park gives shore anglers a way to cast for whiting and redfish on a moving tide.

Tides & Conditions

Tides are small in the Laguna Madre, so wind is the driver. A light breeze creates a ripple that helps sight-casting, while strong wind muddies the flats. Fish the windward shoreline where bait gathers, and choose the first light for calm water. Plan trips around the first hour of daylight, when winds are lightest and the flats are calmest. Evening fishing is also worthwhile when the afternoon wind dies and the flats turn glassy near sunset.

Tackle & Tactics

Live shrimp under a popping cork or a soft plastic for trout and redfish, and live bait or a paddle-tail for snook. Use 15 to 20 pound fluorocarbon. Make long casts and move slowly in clear shallow water to avoid spooking fish. A weedless gold spoon fished slowly over the grass is a dependable searching lure for redfish in shallow water.

Local Intel This Week

Public access includes Isla Blanca Park, Andy Bowie Park and Port Isabel launches. Fish concentrate on grass flats, at docks and around the jetties. Check current state and federal regulations and seasons before keeping fish, because Texas snook and redfish rules are specific. Additional access includes the South Padre Island Convention Centre fishing pier and the Laguna Vista fishing pier, which attract trout and redfish.

This Week’s Tip

Fish the wind line. Bait collects on the downwind shoreline, and trout and redfish follow it. Keep your approach quiet in the shallows, because the clear water carries sound.
